Wintering: Rooting, Resting & Reclaiming Ourselves

January arrives quietly.


After the outward energy of December — the gatherings, the expectations, the momentum — there is often a natural inward pull. A sense that something in us is asking to slow down, to soften, to land.


In nature, winter is not a pause in life — it is an essential season of restoration.


Roots grow deeper beneath frozen soil. Trees conserve energy. Seeds lie dormant, not inactive but preparing. Nothing is rushing, yet everything is in motion.


To practice wintering is to remember that we, too, are seasonal beings.

And yet, many of us have learned to move through winter as if nothing has changed — maintaining the same pace, the same expectations, the same output. We push against the season rather than listening to it.

Wintering offers a different invitation.


It asks us to:

  • slow the nervous system

  • ground back into the body

  • reclaim rest without guilt

  • root into what is essential

  • honour cycles of contraction as deeply meaningful


This season is not asking you to become someone new. It’s asking you to return — and to root more deeply into yourself.


Rooting Instead of Resolving


January often comes with pressure to “start fresh,” to set goals, to fix or improve ourselves.

But what if, instead of resolutions, we chose rooting?

Rooting is subtle. It’s slower. It’s not always visible.And it’s the foundation for any sustainable growth.

Rooting might look like:


  • fewer commitments and more spaciousness

  • embodied practices that anchor you in the present

  • gentle rhythms that support your nervous system

  • choosing rest before burnout forces it

  • being honest about capacity rather than pushing through


Rooting asks a different question:What do I need in order to feel safe, supported, and resourced right now?

For some, wintering means solitude and simplicity.For others, it means guidance, community, and being held in a supportive container.


There is no “right” way to winter — only a more truthful one.



Reclaiming Rest & Grounding the Body


Many of us live with a baseline level of urgency in our bodies. Even in quieter seasons, the nervous system stays alert, braced, waiting.

Winter offers an opportunity to gently unwind this pattern.


Grounding practices — breath, movement, presence, reflection, touch — help signal safety back into the body. They allow us to shift from survival mode into rest, connection, creativity, and clarity.

But this kind of rest can be hard to access alone.


Especially if:

  • slowing down feels unfamiliar or unsafe

  • you’ve been holding a lot for a long time

  • your body is tired but your mind keeps pushing
